Appleby Village

The village of Appleby is located approximately 4 miles north of the town of Broughton in North Lincolnshire and is a very small rural community with a very rich heritage.  The Appleby Parish includes Appleby, Appleby Station, Santon and Clappgate and is home to less than 600 people but boasts a vibrant community involved with all aspects of both its history and future development.

The residents actively promote their community by means of annual events such as the highly regarded Appleby Show, and Appleby Produce Show, community-based clubs such as the community café, village church and many more.  The Parish Council is supported by 8 Parish Councillors and 3 Ward Councillors, who serve the community to ensure the smooth running of the council and maintain the beauty and originality of this incredible small village.

This website is intended to give open access to allow the public to view the initiatives, such as social planning, finances and the transparency of the Parish Council, and links to other hugely informative websites with regard to local history.

Appleby sits on a gentle dip slope of a limestone escarpment, sloping eastwards towards the old course of the River Ancholme – a setting that gives the village a peaceful, rural-and-countryside feel.

The history of Appleby stretches far – the village was recorded in the 1086 survey (the Domesday Book), where it was already a community of some size – with about 26 households at the time.  Archaeological interest continues in more modern times: the Appleby logboat – a dug-out boat dating from the Bronze Age (c. 1500–1300 BC) – was discovered in 1943 in the old River Ancholme near the village.

Architecturally and socially, Appleby retains much of its character as a former estate village. For centuries it was under the ownership of the Winn family, who from the 17th to the 19th centuries shaped much of the village’s built environment.  The result is a distinctive mix of buildings: older 17th- and 18th-century cottages alongside later 19th-century estate “model cottages”, built for estate workers. Houses are often made of local limestone and red brick, with pantiled roofs – giving Appleby a visually coherent and traditional rural character.

At the heart of the village stands the parish church, St Bartholomew’s Church, Appleby – parts of which date back to the early 13th century, though it underwent restorations over time.  The village also maintains a strong sense of community, with a village hall acting as a centre for local gatherings, events and social life.
